Introduction to Yongle Palace

There are five main buildings on the central axis of Yongle Palace, namely the Palace Gate, Dragon and Tiger Hall (also known as Wuji Gate), Sanqing Hall (also known as Wuji Hall), Chunyang Hall and Chongyang Hall. Among them, the palace gate was built in Qing Dynasty, and the rest were built in Yuan Dynasty. There are spacious and tall stele corridors on both sides of the courtyard from Gongmen to Longhu Hall, displaying 30 stone tablets of past dynasties, describing the construction process and mural contents of Yongle Palace. There are no windows in the four temples, except for the gate, which are all walls, covered with Taoist murals, with magnificent momentum and exquisite painting skills, with a total area of 1000 square meters, which is rare in China. Among them, Longhu Hall and Sanqing Hall are large-scale figure paintings, while Chunyang Hall and Chongyang Hall are serial story paintings.

The appearance of Longhutang is simple. The tall and burly statues of the two stars, Qinglong and Baihu, have been destroyed. Now only murals have been preserved, depicting 26 gods guarding heaven, such as Shen Tu, Lei Yu, Tianding, Lux and local gods.

Sanqing Hall is the largest hall in Yongle Palace, with seven rooms wide and four rooms deep. The temple is dedicated to Sanqing God. The wall is covered with more than 400 square meters of mural "Yuan Chao Tu". The main body of the painting is the costumes of the Jade Emperor, Antarctic, Dongji, Wei Zi, Gou Chen, Houtu, Mu Gong and Jin Mu, and they worship Sanqing. Immortals stand upright, fairy clouds are lingering and magnificent.

The main mural of Chunyang Temple is called "The Immortal Journey of Emperor Chunyang", which reflects Lv Dongbin's experience of cultivating immortals. The whole painting consists of 52 consecutive murals. There is a banner of "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea" above the lintel of the north wall of the temple. At the exit of the back door of the temple, there is also a picture of "Talking about Zhong You", in which Zhong Liquan is topless, bearded and laughing, while Lv Dongbin is attentive and polite. This painting is bold and unrestrained and vivid, and it is a rare masterpiece of ancient figure painting.

The murals in Chongyang Hall are composed of 49 cartoons, with the theme of Wang Zhongyang's birth, cultivation, enlightenment and the experience of seven children.

The authors of Yongle Palace murals are some unknown folk craftsmen, who have left a world-class art treasure house for future generations with their intelligence.
