Is the geology of the Hetao Plain a rift basin?
Yes, the Hetao Plain is a closed, long-term subsided inland rift basin geologically. The base of the basin is high in the southeast and low in the northwest. Due to the formation of the Yellow River and its multiple diversions in the late Upper Pleistocene, the lacustrine sediments were covered with the Yellow River alluvium, gradually forming the current landform. The landform is mainly composed of the Yellow River alluvial plain and the Yinshan piedmont alluvial plain.
