Morphological characteristics: Deciduous shrub or small tree, Sambucus of Caprifoliaceae. Old branches have lenticels. Leaflets are oblong or ovate-lanceolate, with acute to acuminate apex, broad wedge-shaped base, often asymmetrical, serrated edges and peculiar smell when crushed. Panicle terminal, inflorescence axis and branches at all levels hairless. The flowers are very small. Calyx tube cupular, 5-lobed, lobes triangular-lanceolate. Corolla radial, yellowish white, 5 lobes. Stamens 5, stigma 2-lobed. Berry drupe is subglobose, dark purple or red. Seeds ovate to elliptic, slightly wrinkled. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruiting period is from July to September.
Growing environment and distribution: in hillside forests or roadside bushes. Like sunny and semi-cloudy environment, cold and drought-tolerant, adaptable and avoid water accumulation. Rich, moist and well-drained sandy loam is the best. Distributed in Northeast China, North China, East China, Central China, Southwest China, Shaanxi, Gansu and other provinces.
Medicinal parts and harvest season: leaves, flowers, roots and root bark can be used as medicine. Stems and branches can be harvested all year round.
