Where is the famous Yuandadu today?

The famous Yuan Dynasty is today's Beijing.

The streets north of Chang'an Street in the east and west of today's Beijing were both located in the Yuan Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty Beiping City, so they have not changed much, and they still retain the layout of the Yuan Dynasty period. The layout of the streets in the capital city of the Yuan Dynasty established the basic pattern of Beijing today.

The territory ruled by the Yuan Dynasty was very vast. As the capital city of the Yuan Dynasty, because it was the political and cultural center, it had a large population and a prosperous commercial economy.

The fact that there are only two doors on the north wall of Dadu in the Yuan Dynasty has another meaning in Feng Shui. The south is yang and the north is yin, so the south wall of most cities is yang, and three gates are built, and the north gate is yin, and only two gates are built. This is the reason why there are only two gates on the north wall of most cities.

The Mongolian Empire implemented a system of enfeoffment among various states. Today, Mongolia and most of China are called the Yuan Empire, or the Yuan Dynasty. The Mongol Empire established by Genghis Khan has been divided since Kublai Khan came to the throne in 1260, evolving into Kublai Khan's Yuan Dynasty (Yuan Empire) and the four major khanates located in its west. The Yuan Dynasty included today's Mongolia and most of China.

After Kublai Khan ascended the throne in 1260, he made Shangdu the capital of the Yuan Dynasty. However, Xanadu was located in the north, which was not conducive to controlling the Central Plains. Therefore, in 1264, Kublai Khan decided to move the capital to the Yanjing area after resolving the dispute over the throne with his brother Ali Buge.

At that time, there was the ancient city of Jinzhongdu in the Yanjing area. However, this city went through the wars in the last years of the Jin Dynasty. Since it was captured by Genghis Khan’s Mongolian army on May 31, 1215, most of the palaces in the city have been demolished. Or it was burned down by fire, and the Lianhua River system, the city's water supply source, has been running out of water and cannot meet the daily water needs of the capital.

After the Mongols captured Jinzhongdu in 1215, it was renamed Yanjing. In August 1264, Kublai Khan issued an edict to change Yanjing (today's Beijing) as the central capital and as the accompanying capital. In 1267, it was decided to move the capital to Zhongdu in the Central Plains. In 1272, Zhongdu was renamed Dadu (Khanbali in Turkic, meaning imperial capital), and Shangdu was made the companion capital.
