Zhao 'an dialect is a mixture of Chaoshan dialect and Min dialect, with Chaozhou grammar, Zhangzhou tone, Chaozhou plus Zhangzhou pronunciation and Chaozhou plus Zhangzhou plus Quanzhou vocabulary.
The biggest difference between Zhaoan dialect and Chaozhou dialect is that Chaozhou dialect has eight tones. Zhaoan dialect has seven tones just like Zhangzhou dialect. Chaozhou dialect has a posterior nasal sound but no nasal sound, while Zhaoan dialect is just the opposite, with only a anterior nasal sound but no nasal sound. So we can only say that Zhaoan dialect is like Chaozhou dialect, not like Chaozhou dialect. Zhaoan dialect is difficult to define.
