LD50: The LD50 of Qianghuo volatile oil administered to mice is 6.64g±0.87ml/kg.

Toxic reactions:

The maximum tolerated dose of Qianghuo aqueous extract by oral administration to mice is 40g (crude drug)/kg, and the maximum tolerated dose by intraperitoneal injection is 12.5g/kg kg.

The maximum tolerated dose of Qianghuoshengshi Decoction given to mice by intragastric administration is 62.4g (crude drug)/kg, which is equivalent to 133 times the clinical dosage.

In the long-term toxicity test of Qianghuoshengshi Decoction, rats were administered 46.80g/kg, 23.40g/kg, and 2.34g/kg (equivalent to 100, 50, and 5 times the clinical dosage.), continuously. After 4 weeks of administration and 2 weeks of drug withdrawal, no abnormal changes were found in the growth and development, blood routine, liver and kidney functions and important organs of the rats in each dose group.

The above shows that the toxicity of Qianghuo and Qianghuo Shengshi Decoction is very low and very safe.

(4) Clinical observation

Qianghuo is non-toxic. There is no discomfort when taken as a decoction in water within the normal dosage. There are no obvious side effects when taking it for a long time or taking it in large doses (less than 30g) by decoction in water.

Use 30g of water for each dose. Patients with arthritis generally have no obvious discomfort reaction, but some patients have reactions such as getting angry and sweating. For patients with colds and fever, it can induce sweating and reduce fever, but it does not increase internal heat; for people with original internal heat and spontaneous sweating due to physical weakness, 12g of water decoction will cause internal heat and increase sweating. This is what Chinese medicine says when there is a disease, the patient will suffer from it. The principle that if there is no disease, it will damage the righteousness.

The difference between Qianghuo and Duhuo

"Shen Nong's Materia Medica" records that "Duhuo is called Qianghuo". "Compendium of Materia Medica" records that "Duhuo and Qianghuo are two species in one category." Therefore, the two books only have an entry on Duhuo and not on Qianghuo. Although the prescriptions of the Jin and Yuan Dynasties, such as Qianghuo Shengshi Decoction and Daqin Genji Decoction, contain both Qianghuo and Duhuo, herbalists still insist that they are the same medicine. This may be because they are plants of the same family and genus, and the shapes of their above-ground herbaceous parts are very similar. However, "Compendium of Materia Medica" has recognized that the two drugs "have different shapes, colors, and smells, so they are different theories."

The division of Qianghuo and Duhuo from one kind of medicine into two kinds of medicine shows that the understanding of traditional Chinese medicine is constantly being revised and gradually deepened, and it is constantly developing. Although it is slow, the attitude towards understanding is rigorous and scientific.

After Qianghuo and Duhuo were divided into two medicines, the saying that Qiang was superior and Duhuo was inferior appeared again. Is independent living only suitable for people below the waist? This is also a biased view.
