Ninghai County is located in the eastern part of Zhejiang Province, on the southern coast of Ningbo City, between Xiangshan Port and Sanmen Bay, where the Tiantai Mountains and Siming Mountains meet. It borders Xiangshan County to the east, Sanmen County of Taizhou City to the south, Tiantai County of Taizhou City and Xinchang County of Shaoxing City to the west, and Fenghua District to the north. It is located between 29°06′~29°32′ north latitude and 121°09′-121°49′ east longitude.
Ninghai County is located between the Tiantai Mountains and the Siming Mountains, with mountains on its back and the sea, high in the west and low in the east. It belongs to a coastal low-mountain and hilly area. The western and southwest mountains overlap and belong to the middle section of the Tiantai Mountains. They wind in from the northwest and southwest from Huading Mountain and Kuocang Mountain respectively. The eastern part is dominated by low hills and alluvial plains.
