Zeng Guofan’s office was extremely simple

On a hot summer day in August 1867, Zeng Guofan was chatting with his staff disciple Zhao Liewen and saw that Zeng Guofan’s office as Governor of Liangjiang was connected with a famous calligraphy and painting None, Zhao Liewen asked him, wouldn't everyone laugh at you for being too simple? Zeng Guofan said: "If you write an epitaph for me in the future, you can add this sentence." Zhao Liewen replied: "Teacher, you have been compiling books and chronologies for decades, but you cannot write such a moral article for thousands of years. Come on, I'm afraid no one can cut your back accurately."

On the fourth day of February in 1872, Zeng Guofan died of illness in the Nanjing Governor's Mansion at the age of sixty-two.

After receiving the news, the Qing court first withdrew from the court for three days. He once vowed in his home letter: "I usually don't believe in Feng Shui." , but he was very concerned about the burial matters of his ancestors, and even deeply tied his own destiny to the appropriateness of the tombs. After his grandmother was buried at the tomb site chosen by his grandfather, Zeng Guofan could not conceal his joy and reported in his family letter: "After my grandmother was buried, everything in the family went well. My grandfather's illness was cured, and his ringworm was cured, and it suddenly rose to Second grade." After that, Zeng Guofan began to change from not believing in Feng Shui to being extremely devout.
