About 110 kilometers long, 80 kilometers wide, covering an area of 4848 square kilometers, and an altitude of 260 meters, with a maximum depth of 165 meters. The lake is densely covered with islands and intertwined with promontories and bays. The lake water flows southward into Lake Superior through the Nipigon River. The drop from the Nipigon River to Nipigon Bay reaches 76 meters within 48 kilometers. A hydroelectric power station was built to provide electricity for the mining industry and the entire lake area.
Lake Nipigon is located 128 kilometers northeast of Port Arthur, Ontario, in a gold mining area with an altitude of 259 meters. Area is 4843 square kilometers. There are many small islands in the lake. Its outlet river, the Nipigon River, flows southward into Lake Superior. The lake is densely covered with islands and intertwined with promontories and bays.
