Safety Education Handwritten Newsletter: Do you need to turn off your mobile phone when it rains or thunders?
With the advent of summer, strong convective weather has increased, and thunder and lightning weather has also increased. During thunderstorms, many people will turn off the TV, unplug the power supply, and turn off their mobile phones. Is this really necessary? Recently, the reporter learned from Li Long, director of the Meteorological Center of Yibin Municipal Government and chief engineer of the Lightning Protection Center, that At present, residents have a certain understanding of indoor and outdoor lightning protection, but there are also some misunderstandings. For example, even in thunderstorms, mobile phones can still be used indoors with complete lightning protection devices.
Lightning accidents often occur in rural areas
According to statistics from the Lightning Protection Center of Yibin Meteorological Bureau, in 2015, seven lightning safety accidents occurred in Yibin City, and two people were killed by lightning. died and three people were injured. In 2015, 32 lightning disasters occurred in Yibin City, killing one person and causing economic losses of tens of millions. Lightning strikes causing personal injuries mainly occur in urban suburbs, rural areas and outdoors.
?Urban suburbs and rural areas are areas where lightning disasters occur frequently. ?Li Long said that since most houses in rural areas were built by villagers themselves, the vast majority of houses are not equipped with lightning protection facilities. At the same time, the chaotic connection of TV and telephone signal lines and power supply lines in rural areas also makes it easier for lightning to enter indoors. door. Seven years ago, a case occurred in Guanyin Town, Yibin, where a nine-year-old boy died after lightning struck a house from a power supply line and was hit by a power socket. In urban areas, there are standardized design evaluations, construction inspections and completion acceptance tests for lightning protection devices. Most of the newly built, expanded and renovated houses have complete supporting lightning protection devices when they are put into use, so there are fewer lightning strikes.
Indoors need to be kept away from metal pipelines
There are two main types of lightning protection: external lightning protection and internal lightning protection. External lightning protection mainly uses lightning rods, lightning protection nets and other diffusers to introduce lightning. Underground, internal lightning protection mainly involves equipotential shielding and using lightning protectors (SPD) to discharge the strong overvoltage that invades the room.
Outdoors, lightning injuries to humans are mainly caused by direct hits to high-potential objects, resulting in lightning strikes and step voltage (the voltage difference between the feet of a walking person). Therefore, when a thunderstorm occurs, you should stay away from tall and pointed objects such as trees, telephone poles, and chimneys; do not open umbrellas in open areas, do not run, and do not use metal objects outdoors. Indoors, try to stay away from doors, windows, balconies and exterior walls. Do not approach or touch any metal pipes, including water pipes, natural gas pipes, etc. Solar water heaters cannot be used. Try not to use household appliances such as TVs, landline phones, computers, etc. Unplug all power plugs if necessary. Thunder and lightning misunderstandings
Can't use mobile phones during thunder?
Many people believe that mobile phones cannot be used during thunderous days because the electromagnetic waves of mobile phones will attract thunder and lightning. Li Long believes that this view is wrong. The electromagnetic waves of mobile phones have nothing to do with attracting lightning. The probability of mobile phones attracting lightning is the same as the probability of attracting lightning by wearing metal-framed eyes or metal decorations on our bodies. ?Li Long said. Therefore, mobile phones can be used indoors with complete lightning protection devices. If you are struck by lightning, does it mean that the thunder god has carved words on your body?
When I was a child, the elders always taught children that people who do bad things will be struck by lightning. ?Thunder Guild will remember the wrong things you have done and will also engrave words on you. Li Long explained that the "engraving" is not as magical as the legend says, but a "flashover phenomenon" after the human body is struck by lightning. After the human body is struck by lightning, electric current will pass through the surface of the human body in the form of an arc. Since the body still has water and conducts electricity, the water will quickly evaporate under the lightning strike and leave traces on the surface of the skin, like "engraving".
