Lvliang City is located in the west of Shanxi Province, in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It belongs to Shanxi province, not to any other city. Shanxi Province is a prefecture-level city.

Named after Luliang Mountain, which runs through the whole territory. It is located between 36 43'-38 43' north latitude and110 22'-1219' east longitude. It borders Yulin City, Shaanxi Province in the west, Taiyuan City, the provincial capital in the northeast, Jinzhong City and Linfen City in the east and southeast respectively. It belongs to temperate continental monsoon climate zone.

The total area of the city is 2 1 140 square kilometers, and it governs 1 municipal districts, 18 counties and 2 county-level cities, with a permanent population of 3,878,900 (20 17).

Lvliang is an old revolutionary base area. During the revolutionary war, it was the main battlefield of the Red Army's crusade, the capital of the Shansi-Suiyuan border region and the seat of the Central Rear Committee. Famous scenic spots are: North Wudang Mountain, Guashan Mountain, Pangquangou, Xinghua Village, Jiudu and Zetian Temple.
