What is black and white Huizhou?
Black and white Huizhou refers to the overall black and white tone of Huizhou’s buildings, mainly the background color of the firewall (horse head wall) is black and white, and the green tiles and white walls. There are many such buildings, so they look black and white, like an old black and white photo. The simple white bricks and black tiles bring people's thoughts to the distant ancient times and become eternal memories.
Those black and white Huizhou buildings may better describe the life of Huizhou women. The white one represents the glamorous surface of life, with all the jewels and ornaments; the black one represents the reality of life, being alone in an empty house, lonely and melancholy. It's also like a Huizhou folk song: "Regret, regret! Regret that I should not have married a bachelor. I have stayed in an empty house for three years. What a hall. Sleeping alone in an empty bed every night."
Black and white: very opposite and yet Unity is the final abstraction of color. Can be used to express philosophical things.
Black: emptiness, nothingness, eternal silence.
White: Nothingness, endless possibilities.
“When yin reaches its extreme, it is black, and when yang reaches its extreme, it is white.” If there are thousands of colors, they must be chaotic. Black and white is the unity of the colorful world. It expresses a kind of eternity and stability, all of which are naturally achieved in the pursuit of visual reality.
Black represents mystery; white represents purity. Black represents nobility; white represents innocence.
Black makes white look whiter, and white makes black look darker. The two can make each other more noble and more obvious.
Huizhou’s motto is “eighty parts are mountains, one part is water, and half is farmland and manors.” The territory is full of towering peaks, lined hills, intertwined ridges and valleys, with deep mountains, valleys, basins and plains, with clear waves and looping streams. Everywhere is clear and majestic, with beautiful water and mountain spirit, just like a beautiful painting. "I have never dreamed of going to Huizhou" (Tang Xianzu of the Ming Dynasty). Many literati and poets have admired her. Some tourists even "loved its clear mountains and rivers and stayed there for a long time."
In the old days, urban and rural residences in Huizhou were mostly brick-and-wood structures. In the Ming Dynasty, they were characterized by spacious upper floors. After the Qing Dynasty, they were mostly three-room houses with one bright room and two dark rooms (left and right bedrooms). There are multiple entrances in one house. The gate is decorated with stone and brick carvings of landscapes and figures. The gatehouse has double eaves and flying corners. Each entrance has a patio for ventilation and light. It is commonly known as "Sishui Guitang", which means "wealth." "No leakage". There are partition walls between each entrance, and a high fire wall (horse head wall) is built around it. From a distance, it looks like an ancient castle. Generally, a family lives together once they enter, the middle door is closed, and each family has its own family. Live life. The middle door is opened, and one door is opened to pay homage to the ancestors. The climate in Huizhou's mountainous area is humid, and people generally use the upstairs as the main habitat for daily life, retaining the legacy of the "nest residence" of the indigenous Shanyue people. It is spacious, with halls, bedrooms and wing rooms, and there is also a "beauty resting place" along the patio.
