Why is Shanghai called Shen?
Shanghai is often called Shencheng by others. Shen and Hu are both well-known abbreviations for Shanghai. Shencheng, the name of the Chinese Super League team Shanghai Shenhua is taken from this abbreviation.
The reason why Shanghai is called Shen can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, which is related to Huang Xie, Lord Chun Shen, one of the famous four princes of the Warring States Period at that time. The other three are Wei Wuji, Lord Xinling of Wei State, Zhao Sheng, Lord Pingyuan of Zhao State, and Tian Wen, Lord Mengchang of Qi State.

Chunshen Jun was actually an aristocrat of the Chu State and once served as the prime minister of the Chu State. He took a fancy to Gusu, the ancient capital of the Wu State, which is now Suzhou, so he applied to the King of Chu and got He made the land of Wu his capital.
At that time, Chun Shenjun’s territory included the western part of Shanghai. At that time, Shanghai was not as prosperous as it is now, and was a desolate land. At that time, the Huangpu River was still an unknown river. The river was silted up, the river bed was too high, and it often flooded. So he built a water conservancy project here to clean up the silt, dredge the Huangpu River, control the water into the river, and divert it into the sea.

To commemorate Chun Shenjun, who is known as the first person to build Shanghai, people call the river he first managed Huangxie Pu. , and a temple was built for him. Later, the river was changed to Chunshen River, or Shenjiang River for short.

Today, Shanghai still retains many place names related to Chunshenjun Huang Xie, including Huangpu District, Chunshen Road, Chunshen Village, Huangpu River, etc., all in memory of him.
