3. Why should I wear a mask? Why do I have to wear a mask in the first two classes? We have shown you how to choose the mask body and filter material. Then, if these two points are done correctly, can we avoid the influence of pollutants and really play the role of masks effectively? Actually, it is not.
Below, we will introduce several factors that affect the efficacy of masks and let everyone know the importance of wearing masks in polluted environments. Generally speaking, it depends on four factors, three of which are aimed at the mask itself. They are: 1. Efficiency and respiratory resistance of filter materials. 2. The tightness of masks with different faces. 3. The protective coefficient is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the mask in protecting workers' respiratory system.
For example, the number of designated protective systems and masks we introduced to you in the last issue. However, a mask with good design, good fit and good performance will play a vital role in enhancing or weakening its efficacy, that is, the fourth factor, wearing time.
Before talking about its importance, we should know the following questions. 1. What is the purpose of protecting the respiratory system? You should know that no type of mask has a "zero exposure" protection level that allows users to completely and completely get rid of injuries.
The main purpose of wearing a mask is to reduce the concentration of harmful substances inhaled by workers, so as to reach an acceptable concentration level that is harmless to the body. For this acceptable concentration level, we take the allowable exposure value (PEL) of various harmful substances as an example.
PEL value refers to the concentration level of pollutants when workers are exposed to air pollutants without adversely affecting their health. In addition, the threshold value (TLVS) issued by the American Association of Industrial Hygienists has the same meaning.
2. When we should wear masks, what is the way for pollutants to enter the human body? Only by understanding this can we understand the concept of wear coefficient. When we wear masks, pollutants enter the human body in four ways.
(1) Insufficient filtering. If the filter material, including dust-proof cotton filter or chemical filter box, is selected correctly and replaced in time when it fails, this need not be considered.
(2) Improper facial closure. The tightness between the mask body and the face can be tested by quantitative or qualitative methods and testing means. If any test proves that satisfactory sealing can be achieved, this can be ignored.
(3) Improper maintenance. In the process of cleaning or installation, if the operation is improper or the parts are not replaced in time, the parts such as the mask body or the exhalation valve will be damaged, thus destroying the overall sealing performance of the mask and reducing the efficacy of the mask.
(4) Don't wear a mask. Then, even for a short time, harmful substances will be directly inhaled into the lungs.
For the last point, that is, the time of not wearing masks is related to the workers' acceptance and cooperation with masks, which helps us to introduce the concept of wear factor. Wearing coefficient refers to the percentage of working time that workers wear masks when they are exposed to pollutants (that is, when they should wear masks).
To sum up, there are four possible ways for the above harmful substances to enter the human body. The following examples illustrate the adverse effects of not wearing a mask on users. Example 1. We assume the following conditions: a. The pollutant concentration level is 10 times PEL value; B 10% of the time did not wear a mask, that is, the wearing coefficient was 90%; C The sealing coefficient of the mask is 100, that is, for every 100 unit of pollutants after wearing the mask, 1 unit will enter the mask due to sealing problems.
(This number is determined by the qualitative fit test of half-face mask. For example, the minimum fitting coefficient of a half-face mask is 100 as measured by the FT-l0 setting fit tester of 3M company. We calculated that when workers were exposed to harmful substances with PEL concentration of 10% of the time and were effectively protected by masks for 90% of the time, their combined effect was that the total exposure of workers was still greater than the allowable exposure concentration value PEL, indicating that workers were not effectively protected.

This shows that by increasing the wearing time by 5%, the exposure level has been reduced by nearly half, which has been within the allowable exposure concentration (PEL), and the workers have been well protected. Comparing these two examples, the overall exposure of XPEL is 0.595 times.
It can be concluded that although a good mask can help our staff to carry out effective protection when wearing a mask, the overall protection effect on the staff may be greatly reduced because they do not wear a mask for a short time in a polluted environment. Since it is very necessary for workers to insist on wearing masks during working hours, how to do this? Of course, as managers, stricter disciplinary measures will be formulated to force workers to wear more clothes during working hours, but this may have a negative impact on workers' morale and productivity, and it is thankless.
A more effective way is to strengthen training to let workers know the dangers of not wearing masks, which will help them consciously insist on wearing masks throughout the work process. In addition, by providing high-quality masks that are light, easy to breathe and communicate freely, workers may be more receptive and willing to wear them, thus truly protecting their health, which is a great wealth for the survival and development of an enterprise.
