Why do you eat steamed buns on Mid-Autumn Festival?
Three Halloween festivals: Tomb-Sweeping Day (the fifth day of April), Zhongyuan Festival (the fifteenth day of July) and Han Festival (the first day of October).
The customs in Tomb-Sweeping Day (the fifth day of April) are rich and interesting. In addition to paying attention to the prohibition of fire to sweep graves, there are also a series of customs and sports activities such as hiking, swinging, playing cuju, playing polo and inserting willows.
Mid-Autumn Festival (July 15) is also the "Confession Day" and "Yom Kippur Day" in China. People who have committed a crime for one year can review themselves through various ceremonies during the Mid-Autumn Festival and ask for forgiveness from people in heaven and earth. During the period from July/Kloc-0 to July 30 of the lunar calendar, people hold sacrificial activities, offering wine, meat, sugar cakes, fruits and even whole pigs (commonly known as "Shen Zhu" in Minnan) and whole sheep to comfort many ghosts who are playing on earth, and pray that they will be safe and smooth all the year round.
Cold clothing festival (the first day of October) offers sacrifices to ancestors, including family sacrifices and tomb sacrifices, both in the north and south. Today, in many areas south of the Yangtze River, there is also the custom of offering sacrifices to new graves on the first day of October. The first day of October is also the first day of winter, and then the climate is getting colder. People are afraid that their ancestors' souls in the underworld are short of clothes and clothes. Therefore, in addition to food, incense sticks, paper money and other general offerings, there is also an indispensable offering-ghost clothing. When offering sacrifices, people incinerate ghost clothes to their ancestors, which is called "sending cold clothes".
Some customs of Ghost Festival are mainly for praying for ancestors, and customs vary from place to place. I don't know where this custom of eating steamed buns comes from, but its meaning is to pray for the ancestors!
