What kind of books can be called classic books?

This was found on the internet where a college student was studying.
A so-called "minimum bibliography of Chinese studies" is thousands of words, which shows how demanding scholars were in those days. Now even the so-called "famous scholars" probably haven't even read one tenth. Hehe, it's true that there are no sages in the world, and it's also true that the vertical pillars are famous one by one.
Mr. Hu put it well:
"It is precisely because contemporary educators want to criticize the degree of Chinese studies of foreign students that foreign students are too modest to read more books on Chinese studies, so they can neither represent China abroad nor have much influence after returning home. Part of the significance of our bibliography is to let a group of international students or alternate students know that Yuan Qu Xuan is a book that should be known. "
In my opinion, there were many Confucian doctors in ancient China, and their Confucian doctors read thousands of books. Therefore, when Confucianism enters the medical profession, its reading must be extensive and dialectical, and the value of its works is not what it used to be. No wonder old man Gan said that he basically stopped buying medical books after the Republic of China. Think about it, it makes sense.
Look at Hu Shikai's list of Chinese studies
Hu Shi: A Minimalist Bibliography of China Studies
foreword
I promised four people, including Hu Jundunyuan of Tsinghua University, to draw up this bibliography.
They are all teenagers who are preparing to study abroad. I really want to gain common sense of national heritage in a short time. Therefore, when I draw up this bibliography, I don't consider people who have the foundation of Chinese studies, but only ordinary young people who want a little knowledge of Chinese studies. This is the first point I want to make.
Although this is a procedure, it is also a practice. This method can be called "historical research of Chinese studies". In the past four or five years, I don't know how many young friends have received the letter "What is the way to learn to govern the country?". At the beginning, I also learned the style of the old-timers, and advised people to start from the "primary school" and pass the phonological exegesis first. I regret it recently! That kind of words is for experts, not for beginners; It is a scholar's show, not an educator's bewitch. The phonological exegetics itself has not sorted out a clue system, so how can it be used as a starting point for beginners? After more than ten years of experience, I have to admit that phonological exegetics can only be used as a tool for scholars, but not as an introduction for beginners. To be honest, today's Chinese studies can't be said; Most people who have made achievements in Chinese studies are idiots. It is important to die hard, but it is not the way for beginners. For a beginner, you must first arouse his real interest, and then he will work hard. At this time of desperation, I once thought of a way to start: taking historical clues as our natural system and taking this order of natural evolution as the course of our governance. This bibliography is based on this concept. The order of this bibliography is the way to start. This is my second point.
This book is not only for private use, but also suitable for all primary and secondary school libraries and local public libraries. Therefore, at the bottom of each book, if there is the easiest version to understand, it is indicated.

(Appendix 1) Letter from Tsinghua Weekly reporter
Suitable sir:
In the supplement of Effort Weekly and the seventh issue of Reading magazine, we saw the minimum bibliography of Chinese studies drawn up by Mr. Wang for Tsinghua students. After reading it, we have many questions in our hearts. Now I want to tell you something and ask your advice.
First, we think that the scope of Chinese studies mentioned by Teacher Wang this time is too narrow. Mr. Wang didn't define Sinology in his article, but judging from his bibliography, it seems that it only refers to the history of China's thoughts and literature. Does the history of thought and literature represent Chinese studies? In the declaration of publishing Sinology Quarterly, Mr. Wang drew up a system of China's cultural history, including (1) national history, (2) language history, (3) economic history, (4) political history, (5) international traffic history, (6) ideological and academic history, (7) religious history and (8). In that case, why not add the departments of national history, language, literature and history, and economic history to the department of Chinese literature history?
Second, on the one hand, we think that the bibliography proposed by Mr. Wang is not wide; On the one hand, we think that Mr. Wang has talked too deeply about the history of thought and literature, which does not conform to the word "at least". We believe that when setting the minimum requirements for Chinese studies for Tsinghua students, we should consider two facts:
The first is our times,
The second is our position.
We students in Tsinghua study for eight years, from middle school to university for one year. Within eight years, the first thing to consider is what an ordinary student can achieve if he is willing to study Chinese studies in addition to the compulsory western language courses.
Second, Tsinghua students have the possibility to study in the United States. The second thing that educators should consider is what level a class of foreign students need to achieve in Chinese studies. We can't finish reading the bibliography drawn up by teacher Wang now, because there are too many bibliographies and too little time. Moreover, for foreign students, if they haven't read Generous Jue Yuan Book of Changes or Hundred Kinds of Yuanqu, contemporary educators will not necessarily criticize them, thinking that they have not reached the minimum level of Chinese studies.
Therefore, we hope that Mr. Wang will draw up another bibliography for us, a truly lowest bibliography of Chinese studies. The books in that bibliography should be read and known by all those who study mechanical engineering, applied chemistry, philosophy and literature, and political economy. We hope that after reading the books listed in the bibliography, we can have a general understanding of China culture. As for the bibliography listed by Mr. Wang in the seventh issue of Reading magazine, it seems to be for those who are interested in specializing in philosophy or literature. We hope that Mr. Wang will continue to publish the bibliography of the Department of National History and the Department of Institutional History in the future, so that young people who are interested in this subject can have a way to further their studies.
I wish Mr Wang good health.
Tsinghua Weekly reporter. Twelve years, March, November.
(Appendix II) Answers
Mr. reporter:
Regarding the first point, I want to say that I temporarily recognize that thought and literature are the minimum of Chinese studies; The rest of the national history, economic history, etc. At this time, there is no way to start, even such a bibliography can't be drawn up.
Secondly, as for the degree and time, I have also thought about it. Although the motivation of this bibliography is for students in Tsinghua, I unconsciously improved and relaxed after I started. I mean, people who want to use this book should choose from this bibliography; Strong, buy more; Read more books when you have time; Otherwise, you might as well buy twenty or thirty things you can buy first; You can always add it yourself in the future. If I set the narrowest minimum at this time, there is no room for expansion. Do you think so, sir?
Mr. Wang said: "Contemporary educators don't have to criticize those foreign students who haven't read Jue Yuan Jing or Yuan Qu Xuan." There is room for discussion on this floor. It is precisely because of contemporary educators' criticism of the level of Chinese studies of foreign students that they are too modest and unwilling to read more books on Chinese studies, so they can neither represent China abroad nor have much influence after returning home. Part of the significance of our bibliography is to let a group of international students or alternate students know that Yuan Qu Xuan is a book that should be known.
If gentlemen insist that I draw up a "real minimum bibliography", I have to add some circles to the original bibliography; It is really indispensable to have a circle. In addition, a copy of Nine Calendars (printed version) should be added.
The following are the circled books:
Bibliography Q&A, Hokkekyo, Zuo Zhuan, China Dictionary of Names, Amitabha Sutra, Selected Works, Nine Classics, Tanjing, Yuefu Poetry Collection, China Philosophy History Outline, Song and Yuan Learning Cases, Complete Works of Tang Poetry, Lao Zi. Annotation of Xunzi, Wang Wencheng Gongquan Shu, History of Traditional Chinese Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties, Han Feizi, Academic Introduction of Qing Dynasty, Bai Qiu, Annotation of Huainanzi Lie Hong, Chronicle of Zhang Shizhai, Water Margin, Book of Rites, Suicide Letter of Cui Dongbi, The Journey to the West and Lun Heng.
Online comments:
Excuse me: sir, there is nothing to eat. Where are all these books?
Did you imagine all this? The mountain extends all the way to the top.
* Gossip about Mr. Hu's bibliography of Chinese studies, which is extensive. In my personal opinion, there are two sets of modern published books that can be mentioned:
The first set, China's All-translated and All-annotated Series, published by Guizhou People's Publishing House, contains 50 kinds of essence shots in the first set, and the second set seems to be 50 kinds. The cover is gaudy and the response is not as good as the first set. The advantage of this set of books is to collect China classics, many of which are recommended by Hu-style bibliographies. It is convenient to have the original text, full notes and full translation. In my opinion, if you want to read the original text, please refer to the notes if you really don't understand it. The whole translation is there. Not if it works.
The second set, "Summary of China's Academic Masterpieces" published by Shanghai Fudan University Press, I received 1 1 volume, which is incomplete. There should be 13- 14 volume. The advantage of this set of books is that it involves many academic classics, because it is only a summary, broad but not refined. But it plays a very good index role.
Whether Siku Quanshu is good or not, personal collection is unrealistic.
So, be taught.
It's a shame that I haven't read so many books.
Don't say that many books recommended by Mr. Hu Lao in his big book list, even those in the "real minimum bibliography" circled at last, have not been read.
Compared with those old-timers of the May 4th Movement, it is far from it. I estimate that after reading the books recommended by Mr. Hu carefully, there is nothing that can't be done in 20 years 10.
Sadly, there is only one set of China's books in American bookcases, such as The Book of Changes, The Warring States Policy, Four Great Classical Novels, Rong Zhai's Essays, Thirty-six Plans, Lao Zi and Zhuangzi, as well as several books by Mr. Huang Renyu, Fifteen Years of Wanli and Great History of China. And some books by Mr. nan huaijin (leisure reading is still good)
In fact, most books are still read online now. Through friends in China, I have created an electronic version of China Handed Down Books (4 CDs), in which the twenty-four histories of a hundred schools of thought contend, the poems of Tang and Song Dynasties, Yuanqu and novels of Ming and Qing Dynasties are basically together, and I have been a superstar member for 10 years. So reading books on the computer is far more time than reading physical books.
* The electronic version of the book can be downloaded.
For example, twenty-four histories, the complete works of Tang poetry in Yangzhou Bookstore, and some novels in Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are several minor obstacles, such as compatibility with English operating system (Windows XP) and the habit of reading on the monitor screen. In short, it is inconvenient to use.
Traditional paper books, some of which are at hand:
The whole Tang poetry (Zhonghua Book Company simplified the layout 15 volume, which is just enough), the whole Song poetry, the whole Yuan Sanqu, etc.
There are several sets that I don't feel familiar with:
There is a set of nine volumes of Selected Songs of Yuan Dynasty, published by Zhonghua Book Company. That's good.
Old editions of Quan Qing Ci Chao, Song Poetry Chao and Yi Xian Qing Poems,
And the newly published Quan Ming Ci (6 volumes)
I smiled.
* It must cost a lot of money.
