How much do you know about Florida?
Florida (English: State of Florida) is a state in the southern United States and also belongs to the Gulf Coast region. It is the fourth most populous state in the United States. The Chinese abbreviation is Fozhou.
History
Florida has been inhabited thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Spanish navigator Juan Ponce de Leon discovered this place on April 2, 1513. It was a festival that the Spaniards called Pascua Florida (Easter of Flowers), so the place was named La Florida by De Leon. Legend has it that De Leon discovered Florida in search of the Fountain of Youth.
Then Spanish and French colonists gradually established territories on the Florida Peninsula. Among them, Pensacola, founded in 1559, and St. Augustine, founded in 1565, became the earliest settlements established by Europeans in North America. Pensacola and St. Augustine also became the capitals of West Florida and East Florida respectively under Spanish rule at that time. The Spanish colonists successfully occupied the entire Florida Peninsula and nearby areas in the 17th century.
In the late 18th century, the area of Spanish Florida was reduced due to the invasion of French Louisiana to the west, the British Thirteen Colonies of North America to the north, and the subsequent independence of the United States. In 1819, Spain signed a treaty with the United States, ceding Spanish Florida to the United States in exchange for the United States recognizing Spanish interests in Texas.
Florida officially became the 27th state of the United States of America on March 3, 1845. But in 1861, the American Civil War broke out. Florida declared its secession from the Union on January 10, 1861, and then joined the Confederate States of America to fight against the Union. After the Confederate States of America was defeated in 1865, Florida's congressional delegation rejoined Congress on June 25, 1868, and Florida resumed its status in the federal government.
