Yuyao is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province and under the jurisdiction of Ningbo City, so Yuyao belongs to Ningbo.

On May 23, 1949, Yuyao was liberated and belonged to the Ningbo Prefecture (the second prefecture of Zhejiang Province).

After 1949, the territory of Yuyao changed many times. The largest one was in 1954, when the cotton area north of Dagutang was placed under Cixi County, and the rice area and mountainous areas in the west of Cixi County were placed under Yuyao County.

Yuyao City is located in the Ningshao Plain, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China. It is located on the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta, adjacent to Jiangbei District and Yinzhou District to the east, pillowed by Siming Mountain to the south, bordering Fenghua District and Shengzhou City to the west.
