When is the best season to visit Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes?

The best time to go to Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes is early autumn, that is, September or October. In this season, the sky is clear, the temperature is comfortable, the wind and sand are light, it is not that dry, and the vegetation is rich, making everything comfortable. However, this is the peak season, so tickets, accommodation, transportation, and food will be relatively expensive. Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes is the collective name for the Mogao Grottoes and the West Thousand Buddha Caves in Dunhuang City, Gansu Province. It is one of the four famous grottoes in my country and the largest and best-preserved Buddhist art treasure house in the world.

1. The Mogao Grottoes are located 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City and are excavated on the cliff at the eastern foot of Mingsha Mountain. It is about 1,600 meters long from north to south, with five floors arranged at different heights, row upon row, shaped like a beehive and dovecote, and is extremely spectacular. It is the largest and richest existing treasure house of classical culture and art in my country, and it is also a world-famous Buddhist art center. It was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in December 1987.

2. In the second year of Jianyuan (AD 366) of Fu Jian in the former Qin Dynasty, the Venerable Samana Le came here and saw thousands of golden lights on Mingsha Mountain, which looked like thousands of Buddhas, so he had the idea of excavating. After continuous construction, it became a holy place for Buddhism, named Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, commonly known as Thousand Buddha Cave.
