How to design the cover of a book?
Next, I will introduce the basic links and key points in the whole production process. As for the detailed design and beautification operation, I won't go into details here, such as special effects text, images and so on.
First, create a new image according to the cover requirements. Sailboat is the cover of 16K( 185mm×260mm), so calculate the size of the cover before creating a new image. The method is as follows: the cover generally includes the cover, the back cover and the spine; Sailboat width = cover width+spine thickness+back cover width =185mm+185mm+2mm = 372mm; Height = = 260mm;; This is the actual size of the cover, but in the actual design process, we usually need to add 3mm to each side (also called "bleeding" size), so the total size of the cover is 378 mm × 266 mm
When creating a new image, set it as shown in figure 1. The height is 26.6cm, the width is 37.8cm, the resolution is 300, and the mode is set to RGB color, which is convenient for editing. Because many functions in PS must be operated in RGB color mode, such as the functions of some filters. We can finish it in RGB color mode and then convert it to CMYK mode (to meet the requirements of printing).
Secondly, after creating the image, display the ruler in the image window in View → Ruler, and then mark the back cover, cover, spine and bleeding position → create new reference line in the view, as shown in Figure 2.
Thirdly, we add material images and special effects words, such as newspaper name, publishing unit, special effects pictures and so on, to the corresponding positions on the front cover and back cover. The spine of the sailboat is too thin to insert. This step is quite flexible. According to the designer's ideas and requirements, the PS function used is different. You can process a special effect picture first and then put it into the image. You can also put an image first and then add special effects; Everything will be done according to the designer's wishes!
Fourthly, the cover image is converted to CMYK mode. Methods: Select image → mode →√CMYK color.
That is, to achieve transformation.
Fifth, preserve the image; The output is in TIF or EPS format, because the images in EPS and TIF format can be released directly when the film is released. Before saving TIF, it is best to export an original file to prevent dissatisfaction the day after tomorrow and facilitate modification. This is a good habit of using PS!
Finally, after the cover is made, the image is copied to the computer connected to the imagesetter, and the four-color film is made by typesetting software. About this operation, students who have the opportunity can go to the publishing house to have a look!
In fact, the formal cover production is not only using PS, but even the cover of our sailboat is designed by the students of the network department and then revised by the publishing house! This involves PageMaker-, a professional typesetting software. Therefore, if you want to design a good cover with PS, you need to cooperate with other software to achieve it! Ok, I hope that through the introduction of this article, your work can be used on the cover of the new issue of Sailing! thank you
To edit pictures, you can use photoshop software. Layers can be used to list pictures or photos on them and add text. Finally, set the page when printing.
If it is published, it is best to invite professional designers to design it.
Look up your favorite pictures on the internet first, then design some by yourself and print them out by computer. Designing and making book covers is basically the same as ordinary picture processing and editing. If you don't have to use vector pictures, you can usually use photoshop. However, there are some things that need attention in the design and production of book covers. First, to choose "CMYK" as "image mode", the colors printed with RGB will be different; The second is the setting of size and resolution. Generally, add "water" to the actual size, that is, add 1-2mm to the actual size screen, that is, the size of the new file (or the selected image file) is larger than the actual size of the book by 1-2mm on each side. When cutting, it will be cut off (the jargon calls this extra part "water"), and the pixel is set to 300 pixels/inch; Third, we should draw the development map of design format (including spine, back cover, folding, etc. ). In addition, design instructions and requirements should be attached and explained in as much detail as possible.
Supplement: photoshop, commonly known as PS, is a worldwide professional image processing software, which can be downloaded by many software stations. It is currently in CS3 version.
