The predecessor of the World Meteorological Organization is the International Meteorological Organization, which was founded in 1873. In 1947, the meeting of directors of meteorological bureaus of 45 countries held in Washington decided to change the international meteorological organization, a non-governmental organization, into the world meteorological organization (WMO), an intergovernmental organization. Its purpose is to promote the international cooperation and rapid exchange of information in the observation network, promote the standardization of observation and the application of meteorology to human activities such as agriculture, aviation and navigation, promote the close cooperation between operational hydrology and meteorology, and strengthen research and training in meteorological related fields. The Convention of the World Meteorological Organization came into effect on March 23, 195, announcing the official birth of the World Meteorological Organization. In 196, the World Meteorological Organization designated March 23, the effective date of the Convention, as World Meteorological Day. On December 2, 1951, the World Meteorological Organization became a specialized agency of the United Nations. The World Meteorological Organization has 16 members, including 155 national members and 5 regional members (including Hong Kong).
The institutions of the World Meteorological Organization include: World Meteorological Congress, Presidium, Executive Council, Regional Association, Technical Committee, Secretariat, etc. China belongs to the second (Asia) regional association. National Meteorological Director Zou Jingmeng was elected as the President of the World Meteorological Organization at the 1th and 11th World Meteorological Congresses held in 1987 and 1991 respectively, and the current Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization is Nigerian Professor Obasi.
the activities of WMO include world weather watch plan, world climate program plan, scientific research and development plan, hydrology and water resources plan, technical cooperation plan, regional plan, education and training plan, meteorological application plan and long-term plan. In order to promote the development of international meteorological science and technology, the World Meteorological Organization has International Meteorological Organization (IMO) Award, Young Scientists Research Award, Volsala Award and Nobel Gelber-Maugham Award.
China is one of the founding countries of the World Meteorological Organization. As early as 1874, it sent experts to participate in the international conference on marine meteorology convened by the International Meteorological Organization. Subsequently, many meteorologists served as members of the Executive Committee and Technical Committee of the International Meteorological Organization. Representatives of China attended the meeting of meteorological directors of 45 countries held in Washington in 1947 and signed the convention of the World Meteorological Organization. As one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) carried out the resolution of the General Assembly, voted by correspondence among WMO members on November 26, 1971, and adopted a resolution on February 24, 1972 to recognize the representative of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate representative of WMO. China has actively participated in various business activities of the organization, such as world weather watch Plan, world climate program, Global Atmospheric Experiment, Hydrology and Water Resources Plan and Technical Cooperation Plan. The National Meteorological Center has become a regional telecommunications hub and regional meteorological center with strong automation capability in world weather watch's global telecommunications system. China has 4 meteorological stations listed in the global meteorological station network, and China has also obtained relevant technical equipment and scholarship support from the World Meteorological Organization, which has promoted the development of China's meteorological cause.
