In terms of driving distance, Guangzhou should be closer. The airport bus from Baoan Airport to Zhuhai is slightly longer than the one from Baiyun Airport to Zhuhai.

Zhuhai became a special economic zone in 1980 and was one of the first four special economic zones in China to implement the opening-up policy. In 2008, the State Council promulgated and implemented the outline of the reform and development plan for the Pearl River Delta region, and defined Zhuhai as the core city on the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary. It was established as a county in 1953, a city in 1979, and a special economic zone in 1980. It enjoys the local legislative power granted by the National People's Congress.
Zhuhai is the only city in the country that has been selected into the "Top 40 National Tourist Attractions" based on its overall urban landscape, and is a Chinese coastal city. The 2013 China Urban Sustainable Development Index Report ranked Zhuhai first in the country. Zhuhai is a new garden city; Zhuhai is a newly promulgated "Happy City" by the country and is known as the "Romantic City".
In January 2016, Zhuhai was rated as one of the first batch of “National Ecological Garden Cities” by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
