Introduction of Dangxiong Airport?
Airport profile
Tibet is located in the southwest border of the motherland, with a vast territory, sparse population and complex topography and geology. It is the main part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with cold and hypoxia, harsh climate, mountainous territory and an average elevation of more than 4,000 meters. It is recognized by the world as an "air restricted area" with extremely high flight difficulty. However, with the opening of 1956 Dangxiong Airport, the air door to Tibet was opened, and the leader transport plane piloted by China Air Force pilots flew over the "roof of the world" and successfully landed at the airport in Lhasa, the local capital of Tibet, setting a new record in aviation history, and the flight test of the Beijing-Lhasa route was successful. It has promoted the development and foreign exchange of air traffic in Tibet. Due to the increasing demand for aviation, with the completion of Lhasa Gongga International Airport, Dangxiong Airport has completed its mission and has been demolished.
Architectural history
1956 is the fifth year of Tibet's peaceful liberation.
With the development of society, the government decided to build Dangxiong Airport, the highest altitude in the world, in Lhasa to promote the traffic and social development in Tibet. So the construction of Dangxiong Airport started at 1955. At that time, Tibet's transportation was extremely backward, and the construction work was extremely difficult due to geographical conditions. At that time, the number of people involved in the construction was not enough, so Tibetans spontaneously organized to help the builders shovel dirt. Tibet's material resources are relatively scarce, so it is impossible to build runways with concrete building structures, and ordinary stones can only be used instead. When the runway was finally completed, the total length was 4,500 meters, but the local climate was bad, and it was difficult for the pilots with the best driving skills to land here smoothly. In addition, when there is strong wind, a lot of flying sand and stones are scattered on the runway, which increases the difficulty of landing. Compared with Yushu Airport in Qinghai, which was difficult to land at that time, Dangxiong Airport was even more difficult.
First flight
On May 26th, 1956, with the cooperation of the 4th Independent Corps of the Air Force, Lin Han, deputy division commander of the Air Force 13 Division, flew the Il-12 transport plane with the number of 516, and finally flew safely from Yushu Airport in Qinghai to Dangxiong Airport in Tibet, completing the trial flight from Beijing to Lhasa. The local people cheered and celebrated.
