We may use all kinds of tools to make clay sculptures, but many clay sculpture beginners don't know much about the choice of clay sculpture tools, so here we introduce several clay sculpture tools and their usage characteristics. I hope it will be helpful for beginners of handmade clay sculpture:

Clay tools (1) Wooden sticks and mallets are one of the tools that must be used in the first step of sculpture. Tamp the clods with a mallet to make them compact, bond with each other and enhance their firmness. The wooden stick not only acts as a mallet, but also can be used to photograph the large structure of plastic statues. Especially when making large-scale sculpture clay molds, they are used the most. Hammer can be bought in grocery stores in the market, and the specifications are large, medium and small. Generally, it is enough for beginners to prepare a small one. Sticks can be made by ourselves. Take a square wooden stick 30 cm long and 0.4x4 cm square, and cut one end into a handle shape for easy grasping. The roughness and smoothness of the rod face vary from person to person. I think it's better to have a rough surface, and it's not easy to get greasy dirt when using it.

Clay tool (2) The clay knife is used for clay wrapping and molding. There are several shapes such as round, oval, inverted triangle, etc., and the tail of the knife is a double-edged sharp knife or a single-edged sharp knife. Used to add mud and shapes. Clay sculpture wrapping knife is generally used to wrap the mud in the low concave part of clay sculpture, so that the shape produces concave lines or negative lines, and plastic can also be wrapped in plane and arc. Clay sculpture, including the blade, can be cut into the required shape with bamboo pieces. Then smooth it with sand skin. Another thin steel wire is smashed into the required shape and clamped on both sides of the bamboo head. Fix it by winding with thin copper wire, and then paint the winding part. When it is dry, file it flat with a steel file to make it serrated, and it can be used.

The mud knife of the clay sculpture tool (3) can be made of round steel (usually processed by a blacksmith), which is widely used in molding technology, cutting the block surface of the statue and deep forming. There are two types of plastic knives. A plastic knife is a triangular bevel at both ends, and one end can be filed into a sawtooth shape, which is used for plastic inclusions. The other is that one end is flat and the other end is triangular, which is more convenient to use.

Clay sculpture tool (4) The plastic pressing knife is made of boxwood, planted wood, camphor wood and miscellaneous wood. It feels good. Used for calendering, compaction and surface treatment in molding. When making, first take a boxwood, cut it out with a hand saw or a knife saw, and then trim it with a fine wood file. After sanding with sand skin, put some edible oil on the water knife for maintenance, so that the wooden knife is smoother and stronger.

The hook knife of clay sculpture tool (5) is mainly used for concave surfaces and hook lines of body parts that are difficult to be touched by other tools. When making, several steel bars with different specifications are intercepted, and the two ends of the steel bars are processed into cutter heads with different shapes according to needs, and the two cutter heads are bent into S-shaped tool handles.

Clay sculpture tool (6) Willow-shaped stainless steel knife is used to carve the details of figures. Such as eyes, ears, mouth and nose. And straight line processing in decorative sculpture. Find a stainless steel covered electrode and cut it to the required length. The slow steamed bread at both ends of covered electrode is hammered into the shape of willow leaves with a hammer in both positive and negative directions, and then polished on the pulley rotated by the machine, or polished with sand skin, and then repeatedly rubbed on the canvas with a knife until the surface is smooth.
