What is Guangzhou also called?

Guangzhou is also known as Yangcheng, Suicheng and Huacheng.

It is said that the earliest place name in Guangzhou was "Chu Ting" (or "Chu Ting"). Under the Zhongshan Monument on Yuexiu Mountain, there is a stone archway built by the Qing Dynasty, with the four words "Ancient Chu Pavilion" engraved on it. Many historical records regard "Chu Ting" as the prototype of Guangzhou and the earliest name for Guangzhou, dating back 2847 years.

It is said that five immortals, wearing colorful clothes, riding five-colored sheep, came to "Chu Ting" with a stalk of six-ear fine rice seeds, gave the rice ears to the local people, and blessed them. There will never be famine here. After saying this, the five immortals flew away into the sky, and the five sheep turned into stones.

The local people built a Five Immortals Temple in memory of the five immortals. Legend has it that the Five Immortals Temple is where the "Chu Ting" is located. Therefore, Guangzhou is also known as "Yangcheng" and "Suicheng".
