During the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty, Yingtian Academy was renamed as Nanjing Imperial College in 1043, making it one of the highest schools in the Song Dynasty. With the support of the famous writer Yan Shu and others, it has greatly expanded. A number of famous teachers such as the famous thinker and writer Wang Anshi taught here, and it became prosperous for a while.

In the second year of Dazhong Xiangfu (1009 AD), Songcheng County (today's Songcheng County) was established. Cao Cheng, a wealthy man from Suiyang District, Shangqiu, Henan Province, invested three million yuan in the place where Qi Tongwen studied, built 150 rooms, collected more than 1,500 volumes of books, recruited students, and hired Qi Tongwen the next year. Sun Qi Shunbin led the academy and established a private school with Cao Cheng as an assistant. With the addition of Yan Shu, Wang Anshi and others, Yingtian Academy gradually developed into the most influential private school in the Song Dynasty.
