Zhaoling is located at the main peak of Jiuzhang Mountain, 22.5 kilometers east of Liquan County, Shaanxi Province. 70km from Xi, 30km from Xianyang and 25km from Xianyang International Airport.

Jiuzhang Mountain is steep, with an altitude of1188m. Located in the yin of Jinghe River and the yang of Weihe River, it is separated from Guanzhong Plain in the south and confronts Taibai and Zhongnan peaks. On the east and west sides, the mountains rise and fall as far as Ye Ping. Nine ridges are evenly distributed around the main peak. In ancient times, the small ridge was called jiusan (or "jiusan").

In 636, the eldest grandson died critically ill. Before she died, she left her last words, hoping for a thin burial. "But please be buried because of the mountain. There is no need to set up a grave or a coffin. The clothes you need are all thin and thin."

Li Shimin has deep affection for his grandson, and he respects his last words. After her death, he temporarily settled her in Jiuyi Mountain. At the same time, Li Shimin decided to choose this place as his home and be buried with his grandson.

Soon, Li Shimin's mausoleum, Zhaoling, began large-scale construction. From the death of the eldest grandson queen in 636 to the death of Li Shimin in 649, the construction of Zhaoling was carried out for 13 years.
