When does the magnetic storm start?

According to the national space weather monitoring and early warning center, a geomagnetic storm occurred on the earth at 2 am on April 24, 2023, Beijing time, and it is expected to last for about two days.

This is the strongest magnetic storm experienced by the earth since the 25th solar cycle. According to reports, geomagnetic storms have derailed Musk's 38 "Star Chain" satellites. In the early morning of 24th, a geomagnetic storm occurred on the earth, and Kp index (global magnetic index reflecting geomagnetic activity every three hours, the higher the value, the stronger the geomagnetic activity) reached a rare "8".

According to the Space Environment Research and Forecast Center of China Academy of Sciences, at 2 am Beijing time on April 22, 2023, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO satellite) detected a coronal mass ejection (CME) accompanied by a solar flare of M 1.7, which was the direct cause of the magnetic storm.

Brief introduction of magnetic storm

CME comes from the joint flare and dark stripe burst of AR3283 in the solar active region. In other words, magnetic storms are caused by "shock waves" generated by the sun. According to reports, the magnetic storm process was produced by coronal mass ejection and was a typical solar explosion. When these substances carrying solar energy fly off the surface of the sun at a high speed of hundreds of kilometers per second, they will form an effect similar to an explosion shock wave and quickly spread to all parts of the solar system.

Under its action, the direction and size of the earth's magnetic field have changed obviously, and geomagnetic storms have followed. The Space Environment Research and Forecast Center of China Academy of Sciences announced at 3pm on 24th that the magnetic storm will last about 1 day. At 20: 00 Beijing time on 24th, when G star passed the satellite ground station, based on the latest orbit forecast results, the National Space Weather Monitoring Center accurately captured its position again, showing that it was running normally.
