Mountain fires broke out late at night in the Liantian Mountains of Yibin, Sichuan. Why are there frequent mountain fires in Sichuan and Chongqing?
High temperatures in Sichuan and Chongqing have led to massive wildfires, burning trees and threatening the local environment. After the Fuling Fire in Chongqing was successfully extinguished, fires also broke out in Wuxing Town, Xingwen County, Yibin City, Sichuan Province, and even near the Tianshan Mountains. Rescue efforts are still underway at the scene. Due to the high mountains and steep rocks at the fire scene, rescue is difficult, and the local meteorological department is working hard to deal with it. The Sichuan Provincial Meteorological Bureau launched forest fire meteorological services to ensure three-level emergency response, and deployed and strengthened monitoring and early warning services in forest fire disaster areas. Xichang, Muli and other places have produced 24 special forecast service products and released multi-level fire remote sensing monitoring products.
The Provincial Meteorological Bureau sent staff to the Liangshan fire scene with the working group of the Provincial Forest Fire Prevention Headquarters to carry out command and dispatch. The Liangshan Meteorological Bureau held a forest fire prevention meteorological support service deployment meeting to deploy meteorological emergency equipment, professional meteorological services, emergency response and other work. The Liangshan Prefecture Bureau and relevant county bureaus have launched a level three emergency response to forest fires, and carry out special weather forecast services for forest fire prevention and fire extinguishing every day. They provide meteorological data such as wind direction, wind speed, temperature, and humidity near the fire site every hour to provide meteorological support for scientific fire fighting. The two wildfires in Fuling District, Chongqing were initially determined to be caused by old men burning wild bee bags and civil wires breaking due to high temperatures and strong winds. The causes of two forest fires in Nanchuan were dry branches and leaves spontaneously igniting under high temperatures and an enterprise's power supply line being overloaded.
The likelihood of forest fires increases dramatically when temperatures continue to rise. Fuels will be closer to ignition points in summer. Coupled with reduced moisture caused by drought, fuels will be drier and more likely to catch fire. Wildfires are almost inevitable due to a combination of high temperatures and drought. A large number of research results also show that as global temperatures continue to rise, the number of wildfires worldwide continues to increase, which is a double blow to humans and the earth's environment. The vast majority of fires are caused by humans, accounting for 98%! We are not just talking about intentional arson, but also other reasons, such as burning paper sacrifices on mountains, littering cigarette butts and burning straw.
