Giant panda naming

Generally speaking, the naming of giant pandas has two stages: the first stage is to take a baby's name.

After the panda cub is born, the breeder will give it a nickname to distinguish it from other individuals. Generally, it can be divided into four categories: First, twins are "big" and "small". For example, Jingjing, a giant panda, gave birth to a pair of male twins, the elder brother named Jingda and the younger brother named Xiao Jing.

The second is the number of babies born. For example, MengMeng, a giant panda, gave birth to three babies, named Mengda, Menger and Menger in turn. These two methods are the most commonly used methods to extract the birth name, which consists of the mother's surname of the giant panda and simple marker characters.

Third, according to the characteristics of giant panda cubs, some are based on appearance characteristics, and some are combined with place names.

The last category is basically taken by the staff at will, such as "bamboo shoots" and "edamame".

After all, the name at birth is just a nickname, and the name that can be included in the international giant panda genealogy is the official name of the giant panda. When the giant panda has an official name, the original baby name will gradually fade out.

For example, the twin cubs celebrated by the giant panda were named "Qingda" and "Xiao Qing" respectively. After becoming the first pair of animal image ambassadors of the United Nations, they were officially named Qiqi and Diandian, and were included in the family tree of giant pandas.

At present, the international genealogy of giant pandas is an international unified numbering and standard naming system for captive giant pandas. Each giant panda will be assigned a unique number, which is equivalent to our human ID number. The name corresponding to this number is the official name of the panda. There are relatively perfect rules and requirements for giving pandas a formal name. Basically, it is required to reflect the relationship with its ethnic group in the name, so as to track and identify it in the relevant scientific research process.

The naming methods of the names included in the genealogy of giant pandas are more formal and have a great influence, which can generally be classified into four categories. The first category is public solicitation. In 20 12, Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base publicly signed a name for a giant panda born on the first day of the Olympic Games that year, and finally the baby panda was named "Oreo".

The second category is official release. As a friendly messenger to convey the friendship of the people of China, there are currently 69 giant pandas living abroad in China. In 20 17, the naming ceremony of the cubs born by Huanhuan, a giant panda from Chengdu, was held in France. Nearly a thousand people from all walks of life in China and France attended the ceremony and named it "Dream".

The third category is public service naming. It can be named by international organizations or protection agencies and awarded to image ambassadors to promote the concept of protection at home and abroad; Can be adopted by enterprises or individuals for public welfare purposes and obtain the right to name; It can also be an invitation to roll call.

The fourth category is to continue to use birth names. Such as "cheese" and "edamame".
