Does Turpan belong to southern Xinjiang or northern Xinjiang?
1. The geographical feature of Xinjiang is "three mountains and two basins", with Altai Mountain in the northernmost part of Xinjiang, Tianshan Mountain in the middle and Kunlun Mountain in the southernmost part. Junggar Basin is located between Altai Mountain and Tianshan Mountain, and Tarim Basin is located between Tianshan Mountain and Kunlun Mountain System. South of Tianshan Mountain and north of Kunlun Mountain are called South Xinjiang. The north of Tianshan Mountain is called Northern Xinjiang.
2. Southern Xinjiang includes Kashgar, Tumushuke, Aksu, Aral, Hotan, Korla, tiemenguan and Kunyu.
3. Northern Xinjiang includes Urumqi, Karamay, Altay, Tacheng, Changji, Shihezi, Beitun, Kokdala, Yili and Bortala.

Turpan City is located in the middle of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bordering Hami in the east, Hejing, Heshuo, Yuli and Ruoqiang counties in Bayinguoleng Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture in the west and south, and Qitai, Jimsar, Rem County and Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Urumqi in the north.
It is about 240 kilometers wide from north to south and 300 kilometers long from east to west, with a total land area of 697 13 square kilometers (2085 square kilometers below sea level), accounting for 4.2% of the total land area of Xinjiang. Turpan is 0/83km away from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
