Influence of foundation settlement on structure

Foundation settlement refers to the settlement of foundation surface caused by the compaction of foundation soil layer under the action of additional stress. Excessive settlement, especially uneven settlement, will make the building tilt and crack, so that it can not be used normally.

The uniform settlement of the building has little effect on the superstructure, but excessive settlement may lead to the indoor ground being lower than the outdoor ground, which may lead to problems such as rainwater backflow, broken pipes and difficult sewage discharge. Large settlement is often accompanied by uneven settlement. Uneven settlement will lead to cracks in the superstructure of the building, and the whole structure will tilt, which will seriously cause structural damage. The load eccentricity caused by the inclination of the building will change the load distribution, which will lead to the instability and failure of the foundation in serious cases.
