In the Han Dynasty, "Land of Abundance" did not refer to Sichuan, but to …

When we modern people mention "Land of Abundance", our first reaction is probably Sichuan. According to the history textbook of middle school, since Li Bing built Dujiangyan, the land of Bashu has become a fertile land and a land of abundance.

However, when the word "land of abundance" first appeared in the history books, it was not Sichuan. Where did the earliest "land of abundance" refer to? This should start with a difficult problem faced by Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

in the fifth year of emperor gaozu of Han dynasty, that is, in February of the lunar calendar in 22 BC, shortly after Gaixia defeated Xiang Yu, the overlord of the western Chu state, under the encouragement of his men, Liu Bang decided to be the emperor in Shandong, and his title was followed by "Han".

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, they are faced with the problem of choosing the capital city. At first, Liu Bang and his men probably wanted to take Guanzhong, the birthplace of Zhou and Qin, as the foundation of the country, following the example of Xianyang at that time. So they headed west, passing Luoyang, the old capital of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.

Luoyang is a thoroughfare, where merchants gather, and all the world's wealth and goods are gathered here, with countless treasures. Liu Bang was originally the director of Peixian County, and he was an ordinary man. When he came to the bustling Luoyang, it was really like the villagers entering the city. When they felt that everything was fresh, they decided not to go west to Guanzhong, and made Luoyang their capital directly.

Just when Liu Bang wanted to make Luoyang his capital, the appearance of a garrison soldier changed his mind.

Among the people who fought with Liu Bang, there was a general named Yu from Qi, and he had a fellow named Lou Jing. When Liu Bang was in Luoyang, Lou Jing happened to be ordered to defend the border in Longxi, and when he passed by Luoyang, he found General Yu, hoping that he could introduce himself to Liu Bang.

General Yu saw what he looked like when he went to see the emperor in a tattered sheepskin coat, and wanted to change his clothes.

who knows, Lou Jing is also a person with personality. He said, I am just going to see an emperor. It is the same whether I wear clothes made of silk or coarse cloth, so what clothes should I change?

People who were capable in that era often had this kind of temper, and there was a legacy of "I don't want to stay here, but I want to stay here" in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. General Yu couldn't twist it, so he asked Liu Bang for instructions.

Maybe he just became emperor, and Liu Bang didn't have any airs, especially when he heard that he was a garrison soldier, not his most hated Confucian scholar, so he readily agreed.

When Lou Jing met Liu Bang, he just said, "Your Majesty is in Luoyang. Do you want to compete with Zhou Shi?" Do you want to make Luoyang your capital to compete with the former Zhou Dynasty? Liu bang replied, yes, what's the matter? What Lou Jing wants is this. He began to "teach" Liu Bang from history.

The way you won the world by Liu Bang is very different from that of Zhou. In those days, when Zhou was loyal to the four seas and the world returned to his heart, when Zhou Wuwang crusaded against Shang Zhou, the leaders of 8 tribes met unexpectedly in Mengjin. Later, when he became king, he built Luoyang as the east capital, taking it as the center of the world and extending in all directions.

Therefore, if a king has virtue, the road can easily control the world. But without virtue, it is easy to be surrounded by enemies from all over the world and perish. With its capital here, we can't rely on dangerous terrain, but we can only cherish the world with benevolence. Therefore, when Zhou Xingsheng was in power, Luoyang ruled the world and the four seas surrendered; When Zhou Shi declined, Zhou could not control the situation and was destroyed in Luoyang.

Now, you, Liu Bang, started with 3, people, and fought against Xiang Yu in Xingyang, with 7 battles and 4 battles. You think that you have destroyed the Qin Dynasty and had virtue over the world, but in fact, you have made people lose their lives and separated their wives. So you still want to follow the example of Zhou Chengwang and Zhou Kangwang and control the world by virtue?

Since Luoyang was no good, Lou Jing recommended Guanzhong as its capital, where the State of Qin had been operating for many years, with a good foundation, a large population and a fertile land.

One of Liu Bang's greatest advantages is that he can listen to advice from others. Hearing this well-founded argument, he immediately dismissed the idea of making Luoyang his capital, but his heroes who fought the world refused to buy it.

Most of the heroes who followed Liu Bang to conquer the world were former Chu people, but also Han people, wei ren people, Zhao people and Qi people, except Qin people. We didn't want to leave home too far and ran to the westernmost Qin land.

Although everyone thinks so, we can't say so, so we can talk privately with a public attitude, so we talked about Feng Shui: Zhou and Qin Dou, who once set their capital in Guanzhong, died, which shows that Guanzhong's kingliness is exhausted and it is not suitable for being the capital.

Some people say that there is no dangerous terrain in Luoyang. It is dangerous in the east, and there are Xiaoshan and Mianchi in the west. It is backed by the Yellow River, facing the water and Luoshui, which is enough to rely on. It seems that as long as people want to do something, they can always find countless reasons, all of which are the position that determines the point of view and the ass that determines the head.

In the end, Liu Bang hesitated, and then Zhang Liang spoke.

Zhang Liang refuted the opinions of these heroes, saying: Luoyang certainly has risks to defend, but its gas field is not big, only hundreds of miles, and it is surrounded by enemies.

Guanzhong is different. It's a letter in the east, Shu in the west, the mercy of Bashu in the south, and the benefit of Huyuan in the north. It can be defended on three sides and controlled by princes in the east.

When the world is stable, the Yellow River and Weihe River can transport the world's grain to the capital. If there is chaos in the world, it can be settled by going down the river. This is the so-called "Golden City is a thousand miles away, and it is a land of abundance" (Historical Records: The Family Who Stay with Hou).

as soon as Liu bang heard that even Zhang Liang said that Guanzhong was good, it seemed that Guanzhong was really good. On that day, he ordered the west to make Guanzhong its capital and build Chang 'an based on Xianyang.

In addition to Historical Records, The Warring States Policy also records that when Su Qin went to the State of Qin to persuade King Huiwen of Qin to adopt Lian Heng's strategy, he said that the Guanzhong area of Qin was "Tianfu".

Later, the political and economic center of gravity moved eastward, and the strategic position of Guanzhong declined. Since the Dujiangyan was built by Li Bing at the end of the Warring States Period, Chengdu Plain has gradually become a "land of abundance" in people's eyes.

In Longzhongdui, it is said that "Yizhou is in danger, fertile fields are thousands of miles away, and the land of abundance", and Sichuan and Sichuan are called "the land of abundance". Therefore, today we think that "the land of abundance" has always referred to Sichuan area.
