Qitai Ghost Town is located in the general Gobi in the east of Junggar Basin, and it can only be reached by walking more than 200 kilometers north from Qitai County. It is said that it is only100km away from the county seat. Geographically, it is at the same latitude as the ghost town of Wuerhe, and both belong to the typical Ya Dan landform. Tens of kilometers to the north from Qitai County is the endless Gobi. Legend has it that in ancient times, a general led an army to chase bandits, but unfortunately he lost his way in Gobi. As a result, the whole army ran out of food and water, so this Gobi was named after it.
Later, people built a temple at the place where the general died and named it "General Temple". Now the General Temple has collapsed, but it has been handed down as a place name and has become the only way to the border between China and Mongolia, only 40 kilometers away from the ghost town.
