Does it make sense for universities to join the debate team?

Joining the debate team in the university is one of the most correct decisions I have made, second only to freshman studying advanced mathematics.

In the days of the debate team, the most unforgettable thing is to prepare for the game in the school coffee shop. After dinner, I will get together with my teammates and constantly polish my arguments in thinking and dialogue. I will be severely scolded by the coffee shop owner, and my brain will hit it off. I looked up and it was already dark. Looking up, the coffee shop was driven away as soon as it closed. Then, standing under the telephone pole downstairs in the dormitory, there were stars and the moon, and we continued to chat until the girl living on the fifth floor called us to leave (true story). The next day, I continued to look up information, discuss and polish arguments until midnight.

Prepare for the game six days a week, from night to midnight. Is it meaningful to argue? At that time, we seldom thought about meaning, so we liked it. Tired? Too late to be tired, only full of happiness and passion. I even think that the feeling of doing something "seriously" like this has been rare since then.

Many people regard debate as a tool to exercise their "expression" ability, and the least important thing they can learn in debate is "how to speak". The output of the debate actually reflects "how to think". For example, in a debate about "making an example of a hundred is justice", the debater of the positive side should not only think about why "making an example of a hundred" is justice, but also think about why some people think it is not justice, where is their rationality and how to deal with it. For example, if one person was not killed, did the decision-maker also make a choice instead of saving another 100 person, and this choice led to the death of 100 person? In this case, is it justice to make a brave choice? In the debate field, debaters never want to convince the other side, but let the audience feel the profound meaning of the debate, get in touch with new possibilities, cut out the "core" of the problem with a dialectical attitude, and let the audience get their own judgment under the condition of full thinking and comprehensive understanding. In the course of the debate, we just kept moving towards the "nuclear". And this process comes from the power of thinking.

I have always been superstitious. Debate can make people develop their brains. I was forced to think about a problem, to explore the possibility of both positive and negative arguments, and to lead a black-and-white and unthinking life. If you want to explain why it is A, you must understand why some people believe in B. There was a debate about whether domestic firefighters should be professional. Without this debate, I don't even know that the constitution of domestic firefighters is still mandatory, let alone the relationship between the status quo of firefighters and the social welfare system. In one debate after another, I can't directly change the reality of the problem, but my voice was heard by the audience at the venue. This kind of thinking happened among hundreds of people, which is really a wonderful thing.

Debate team dinner

Joining the debate team also made me know the most like-minded friends in college. Believe me, the debate team is definitely one of the most easily dumped student organizations. A week of high-density preparation means getting along with teammates, and I can't wait to have dinner and debate together. On the court, the tongues of four people are the same. You question, argue, question and argue in your respective positions, playing different roles but exporting a unified position. After the game, I put all my emotions in every hot pot and rushed back to school under curfew with a smile. I have known my friends from the debate team for five years now, and every time after dinner, everyone's voice is hoarse.

When I first went to college, I signed up for the small class competition of the college as a substitute because I liked Qipa. The debater was not feeling well, so I was in a daze to prepare for the game. The moment I got applause from the audience, I thought it was really worth it. Later, every game and hot pot after joining the team, I felt really worthwhile.
