Tangshan’s lowest temperature in history
As of May 24, 2019, the lowest temperature in Tangshan’s history was -14.8℃.
The climate of Tangshan City is a warm temperate semi-humid monsoon continental climate. In spring, there are more winds and less rain, high evaporation, dry air, and frequent droughts. It recovers quickly, and usually the first thunder is heard in late March.
Summer is characterized by high temperature and humidity, concentrated rain, and frequent disastrous weather such as heavy rain, hail, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Autumn brings mostly sunny weather, large temperature changes, rapid cooling, low wind speed, and refreshing air.
The weather in winter is relatively cold and dry, with little rainfall and strong west to northwest winds.
There are 2600-2900 hours of sunshine throughout the year, the annual average temperature is 12.5℃, and the extreme temperature is as high as 32.9℃ and as low as -14.8℃.
The frost-free period is 180-190 days, the precipitation is 500-700 mm all year round, and the average number of frost days is about 10 days every year.

Tangshan climate characteristics
Climate affects all aspects of human life, food, clothing, housing and transportation. According to meteorological experts, Tangshan has a semi-humid and semi-arid temperate climate with both mountain and ocean climate characteristics. It is affected by the topography and ocean. There is no severe cold in winter and no scorching heat in summer. It has four distinct seasons, with rain and heat in the same season.
The reason for the lack of severe cold in winter is that the northern part of Tangshan is surrounded by the Yanshan Mountains, which often blocks cold air from moving south in winter. This, coupled with the effect of sinking and warming, makes the temperature higher than that of the surrounding Qinhuangdao, Chengde and other places, bounded by the Great Wall. The climate differs greatly, and there is a saying that there are two heavens inside and outside the pass.
The reason why there is no intense heat in summer is that Tangshan faces the Bohai Sea to the south. The Bohai Sea is a huge natural air conditioner, and the sea breeze makes it cool and pleasant.
The four distinct seasons are due to the fact that Tangshan is located in the world-famous East Asian monsoon region. Winter and summer are controlled by air masses with completely different properties, and the wind directions are almost opposite.
The reason why rain and heat occur in the same season is that the water vapor that affects Tangshan’s precipitation mainly originates from the low-altitude southerly airflow flowing from the South China Sea, the Western Pacific, and the Bay of Bengal to North China. In the hot summer, the low-altitude southerly airflow is strong and moves toward North China. The Tangshan area transports a large amount of water vapor and unstable energy, which produces heavy precipitation through a certain triggering mechanism. In winter, the southerly airflow is very weak, resulting in weak precipitation.
