What do you think of the "black life is life" movement?
As a person who is interested in equality, I have always acknowledged racial issues. But this is not what I have studied or thought about (for lack of better wording). It's easy to ignore, as if it's not my problem, but it's my problem. In fact, my white privilege is the whole reason why I regard it as not my problem!
In the past few weeks, I have really gained a new understanding of the unfairness and injustice that black people face every day. In my city, I have heard black people talk about murder. I studied Tamir Rice, brenner Taylor, Stephen Lawrence, and the names of people who died because of their skin color. An uncontrolled place where they were born. I fight with you, cry with you and protest with you. I have written about George Freud and discussed my own prejudices. But that doesn't mean I should stop.
Black life is not a social media trend. Of course I won't spend a week investigating and then forget. I will continue to listen, continue to study, and continue to use my privilege to spread the news.
Now, protest. Corona aside, I agree to protest. I can't speak for everyone, but most of the things I have participated in involve social distance. 90% people wear masks, gloves and drink disinfectant. The people I met there and the love and unity I felt will always be with me.
How many black men and women will be imprisoned, killed or aborted before we can speak for them? When will it be enough? How many colored people must die in Corona before the authorities can investigate the cause? How many years will the revolution and protests last?
It's your turn to speak. Now you should listen. Use your platform and voice, don't expect black people to tell you what to do and where to search. Use your actions. Ignorance is no longer an excuse.
