Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County belongs to Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. Located in the northwest of Sichuan Basin. It is between 31 14' and 32 14' north latitude and 13 44' and 14 42' east longitude, bordering jiangyou city in the east, Anzhou District in the south, Maoxian County in the west and Songpan and Pingwu counties in the north, with an area of 3,83 square kilometers. It is 42 kilometers away from Mianyang City and 16 kilometers away from Chengdu, the provincial capital. It is the only Qiang Autonomous County in China. On May 28th, 24, the Sichuan Provincial Government (Chuanfu Civil Affairs No.19) approved that the original nine Qiang townships in Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County were renamed as Yuli Township, Xuanping Township and Baiqi Township respectively. The original five Qiang and Tibetan townships of Xiaoba, Kaiping, Badi, Baishi and Qingpian were renamed as Xiaoba Township, Kaiping Township, Badi Township, Baishi Township and Qingpian Township respectively, and the original Taolong Qiang and Tibetan Township was renamed as Taolong Tibetan Township.
On May 12th, 28, Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County was one of the worst-hit areas in the Wenchuan earthquake, and qushan town, where it was administered, was razed to the ground due to the May 12th earthquake. On May 22nd, the county government of Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County set up a temporary office in Tianlong Hotel, Anchang Town, Anxian County. At the beginning of November, the the State Council executive meeting examined and approved the site selection of Beichuan New County, which is about 2km east of Anchang Town, Anxian County.
On February 6th, 29, the Ministry of Civil Affairs agreed to transfer Anchang Town, Yong 'an Town, Changle, Hongyan, Shunyi, Hongqi, Wenquan and Dongyu in Anxian County to Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, and the people's government of Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County moved from qushan town to Anchang Town. After this adjustment, the area of Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County increased by 215 square kilometers and the population increased by more than 78, people.
