What is Sophora japonica?
In Beijing's Zhongshan Park, there are seven vigorous and tall Platycladus orientalis trees planted in the Liao Dynasty. They are now more than 1,000 years old and are known as the "Seven Cypresses of the Liao Dynasty". Among these seven ancient cypresses, the one in the east is the most magical. There is a large crack on the main trunk with a circumference of 3.25 meters, and another Sophora japonica grows out of the crack. Sophora trees grow on cypress trees, and there is a phenomenon of Sophora cypresses growing together among the cypresses. It also appears in the Temple of Heaven Park in Beijing. There is a similar "Sophora cypress combined embrace" on the east side of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
