The origin of the names of the four major sub-districts of Shanghai Lingang New City _ The four major origins make contributions to nature
Luchao Port: a path trodden by reeds
Before liberation, fishermen went fishing in the sea mainly from "Toutou Port". Because "Toutou Port" is far from the beach, there is much silt, and the road is muddy and difficult to walk, so some fishermen go out to sea from the dense reeds on the east side of "Toutou Port" and gradually step on a path from the reeds. Since then, more and more people have taken this road. Over time, the road has become wider and lower. After several tidal floods, a deep trough with a width of 5 meters has been washed out of the low-lying road surface. About 24-27 years of the Republic of China (1935-1938), fishermen randomly named this deep trough "Luchao Port". In the future, local governments and locals will also use this place name. In 196, Nanhui County People's Government built a three-gate sluice at the mouth of Luchao Port. When Song Richang, then vice mayor of Shanghai, named the sluice, he changed it to Luchao Port with homonym, which has been used ever since.
Mud Town: an earth embankment built around the Baihe Temple to fight against the tide
During the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, there was a man named Yu in Ningbo. On a mud pier, I saw a white crane standing happily, with a pleasant voice. Yu called his family to escape, and the white crane flew down, but Yu's family finally couldn't get it. Yu observed the flying direction of the white crane and found that its flight path just circled in a square circle. Yu's thought: The white crane is an auspicious bird, and this place must be a treasure trove of geomantic omen, so he settled here to reclaim and build a manor. According to the trail of the crane flying, an embankment several feet high was built. To prevent the tide from invading, it is beneficial to reclaim the land in the embankment. After Yu's family converted the manor into a temple, because the white-walled tile house outside was not changed, the White Crane Temple became a well-known and distinctive temple. Since then, people from all over the world have moved here, depending on the blessing of God and Buddha. Later generations called the earth embankment built around the Baihe Temple to fight the tide "Mud City".
Wanxiang: the name of the grocery store "Wanxiangyu"
During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, Xia Yufang, a merchant, opened the "Wanxiangyu" Da Nan goods store with a large scale and a wide business scope. Because the location is moderate, the business is booming and the reputation is far spread. Nearby shops saw that the business of Wanxiangyu South Goods Store was booming, and they gradually moved northward. They set up shops and factories near Wanxiangyu, and gradually formed a market town street with a length of about .5 kilometers in the north-south direction and curved along Matang Port. From then on, people called it "Wanxiangyu" South Goods Store to buy goods, which is simply called "Wanxiang". Wanxiang called its name.
Academy: the name of the tax grain warehouse
During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, in order to store the tax grain in the Academy area, the Qing government built five warehouses with two rooms, which were called "rent-collecting factories" by the locals. Because these tax grains are dedicated to private schools and various educational funds in Nanhui County, they are also called "Academy Factory" or "Academy" for short. The academy is famous in its four neighbors and was named after it.
