The historical legend of Wanshan Bridge
There is a Wanshan Bridge in Shijingshan. The bridge is connected to an ancient incense road, connecting Fuhui Temple on Qinglong Mountain and Charity Temple on Tiantai Mountain. It became a must-go for incense in western Beijing in the old days. Wanshan Bridge carries the love between the two mountains, like a string plucked on the ancient incense road in western Beijing, a crescent moon hanging in the green forest, and a rainbow connecting the love between heaven and earth, attracting many tourists. In the past, Shijingshan was known as a geomantic treasure land in the west of Beijing. Incense fairs were very popular, and many good men and women went to Tiantai Mountain to offer incense. Every year from March 15th to 17th are the days for offering incense and attending temple fairs. At this time, people from eight counties in eastern Beijing gather in Tiantai Mountain, and stilt clubs, lion clubs, and yangko clubs all go up to the mountain, creating a lively scene in front of and behind the mountain. There are several roads to Mount Tai, but all people go straight to one road, which is Charity Temple East Road. An ancient road meanders through the mountains of Cuipingliuquan, passing through Mentou Village to Chengou, climbing over the southern slopes and crossing the Wanshan Bridge, worshiping the Buddha at the bridgehead, and passing by Shuangquan Temple to Tiantai Mountain.
However, there was no Wanshan Bridge here more than 400 years ago. Legend has it that it was an autumn when the forests were all dyed, and a woman in ragged clothes came all the way from the far south. Her lips were chapped, her complexion was yellow and thin, her bare feet were bloody and scaled, and her whole body was covered in scars. When she reached the bottom of the Nanda hillside, she was blocked by a deep valley more than ten meters deep and thirty meters wide. The floods in the valley were surging. The woman knelt on the ground and said to the sky: I am Feixia. I walked for half a year to get here. I have to rush to Charity Temple before dawn tomorrow to offer incense in order to save my husband's life. Please be merciful. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, please show me a shortcut to Tiantai Mountain. If I can burn incense and save my husband before dawn tomorrow, I am willing to become a monk from now on and worship Bodhisattva all my life. After saying this, Feixia closed her eyes and knelt down to pray. During the first prayer, she heard the rumble of rolling stones in the distance. Feixia did not open her eyes. She had heard someone say that you should close your eyes and meditate when praying to the Bodhisattva. During the second prayer, she felt herself being pushed back a few meters by a force, and was knocked to the ground on her back. There was a heartbreaking pain. Feixia still didn't open her eyes. She just touched her face with her hands and felt something warm. blood streaming down his face. When Feixia paid her third respect, she discovered that the place where she was kowtowing was no longer land, but a stone ground. After kowtowing three times, Feixia stood up and slowly opened her eyes. She was shocked to see a rainbow-like stone bridge in front of her across the deep valley.
This bridge is only 17 to 18 meters long and about three meters wide. It is elegantly and delicately carried across the two banks. The bridge base and arches are all made of stone from top to bottom and are very solid. , let the raging floods roll down but remain unharmed. On both sides of the bridge are bridge railings made of colorful stones. When the sun shines on the stones, they emit a dazzling halo, illuminating the entire valley with colorful colors. The beautiful maple leaves on the mountain suddenly change color, red. Through the sky. Feixia walked to the bridge cautiously and saw a rectangular white jade stone forehead inlaid in the middle of the south outer bridge railing. On it were three shining silver characters "Wanshan Bridge". Not far below the stone forehead was a blue-black stone. The head of a stone lion looks down at the torrent of the deep valley with wide eyes. Its expression is as if it is absorbing all the rivers, with a majestic charm. After crossing the bridge, Feixia continued along the mountain road and walked northwest for more than five miles to Tiantai Mountain. She burned incense before dawn the next morning, made her wish, and then returned to Wanshan Bridge via the original route.
Feixia came to the foot of the Beida hillside a few meters away from the bridge and sat on a stone. At this time, it was raining heavily in the sky, but Feixia remained motionless. She sat cross-legged, looking calm, serene and calm. Ten days later, passers-by were very happy to find a new bridge here. After crossing the bridge, they saw a dignified woman sitting on the stone platform at the north end of the bridge. Her body was like jade, sitting upright and peaceful. The news quickly spread throughout the ten miles and eight villages. People built a stone arch above the stone platform where Feixia sat. From then on, Feixia at the head of the bridge was called the Jingyin Buddha. Two pine trees were planted next to the Buddha. Today, people can see two cypresses that are as thick as each other, growing symmetrically. Legend has it that Feixia's husband knew that Feixia was meditating here and came here to accompany her.
Visitors to Wanshan Bridge can also see two cypress trees guarding a huge granite stone. The lower right corner of the rock is engraved with the words "The first day of November in the eleventh year of Wanli" and other words. Since then, people have to cross the Wanshan Bridge to offer incense at Charity Temple, otherwise they will be considered dishonest. Therefore, Wanshan Bridge has become the only way to go to the Charity Temple and attend temple fairs, and it has become a "holy bridge" in the hearts of religious men and women.
Wanshan Bridge is surrounded by green mountains. In spring, apricot and peach blossoms bloom in the nearby mountains and fields. In summer, you can drink the gurgling stream in the long stream. In autumn, the forest is dyed with colors. In winter, the snow-capped bridge is like jade, making tourists forget to leave.
