Historical evolution of Shangyu District
According to Guo Moruo's textual research, there is a place name Shangyu in Oracle Bone Inscriptions of Yin Shang Dynasty. Shao Kang, the emperor of Xia Dynasty, belonged to Yue State.
During the Warring States Period, the State of Chu was the destroyed State of Chu.
In the 25th year of Ying Zheng, King of Qin (222 BC), Shangyu County was established, belonging to Huiji County.
In the first year of the founding of the People's Republic of China (AD 9), the waste Shangyu entered Huiji County, belonging to Huiji County.
In Jianwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-56), Shangyu County was restored, belonging to Huiji County. In the fourth year of Yongjian (A.D. 129), it was assigned to Nanxiang County, Shangyu, which belonged to Huiji County, and remained unchanged after the Three Kingdoms, the Jin Dynasty and the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
In the ninth year of Emperor Kai of Sui Dynasty (AD 589), Shangyu was abandoned and Suining entered Huiji County, which successively belonged to Wu Zhou, Yuezhou and Huiji County. In the early Tang Dynasty, Shangyu was still a part of Huiji County and belonged to Yuezhou.
In the fourth year of Tang Wude (AD 62 1), Shanxian and Jiushining were Shengzhou, and they were abandoned in eight years. Tianbao and Zhide years (742~758 AD) belonged to Huiji County. After the first year of Gan Yuan (AD 758), it still belonged to Yuezhou. In the first year of Zhenyuan (AD 785), Shangyu was restored. In the first year of Changqing (AD 82 1 year), it was merged into Yuyao, and moved to Yuezhou the following year.
During the Five Dynasties, it belonged to the Eastern Palace of Wu Yueguo.
The Northern Song Dynasty still belongs to Yuezhou. In the first year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (A.D. 1 13 1), Yuezhou was changed to Shaoxing Prefecture.
In 13th year of Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1276), Shaoxing Prefecture was changed to Shaoxing Road, and in 26th year of Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1366), Shaoxing Prefecture was restored and Shangyu was its county.

Shangyu is located on the south bank of Hangzhou Bay, between Hangzhou and Ningbo, across the river from Shanghai, with a geographical area of 1.403 square kilometers and a population of 779,400.
