Most areas of Pakistan are in the subtropics, and the climate is generally hot and dry. The average annual rainfall is less than 250 mm, and a quarter of the area receives less than 120 mm of rainfall. The hottest season in Pakistan is June and July, when the midday temperature in most areas exceeds 40°C, while in some areas of Sindh and Balochistan, the noon temperature may reach over 50°C. The northern mountainous areas with an altitude of more than 2,000 meters are cooler and have large temperature differences. The average temperature difference between day and night is about 14°C. The lowest temperature is from December to February.
