Tokyo, located in the middle of the Kanto Plain, Japan, is an international metropolis facing Tokyo Bay and the central city of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, one of Japan's three major metropolitan areas. "Tokyo" refers in a narrow sense to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, former Tokyo Prefecture or Tokyo Metropolitan Area (former Tokyo City), and can also refer to the Tokyo metropolitan area in general. Tokyo is the seat of the Edo shogunate. Edo was renamed Tokyo in July 1868 (September 1868).
On March 28, Meiji 2, the capital of Japan was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. It has become one of Japan's major cities since the Tokugawa shogunate period.
