Taizhou City is a prefecture-level city in Zhejiang Province. It is a regional central city and modern port city along the coast of Zhejiang Province. It is located on the central coast of Zhejiang Province, bordering the East China Sea to the east, Shaoxing City and Ningbo City to the north, Wenzhou City to the south, and Jinhua City and Lishui City to the west.

Taizhou has jurisdiction over 3 municipal districts, 3 county-level cities, and 3 counties. It is surrounded by mountains and faces the sea. The terrain slopes from west to east, and the northwest mountains are continuous. In summer, controlled by tropical marine air masses, it is hot and rainy. It has tropical climate characteristics.

After liberation in June 1949, the Sixth Prefecture of Zhejiang was established. On October 10 of the same year, the Sixth Prefecture was renamed Taizhou Prefecture, located in Linhai County, and administered seven counties: Linhai, Huangyan, Tiantai, Xianju, Wenling, Sanmen, and Ninghai, as well as Linhai Chengguan and Haimen districts. Yuhuan County belongs to Wenzhou Prefecture.

In May 1950, the area directly under Linhai Chengguan was revoked and placed under Linhai County. In October 1952, Ninghai County was transferred to Ningbo Prefecture. In June 1953, Yuhuan County was divided into Dongtou and Damen Islands to establish Dongtou County, which belongs to Wenzhou Prefecture.
