Differentiate by End Product
Let’s start by answering a basic question. What is the main difference between pure illustration work and conceptual design? The easiest way to judge it is by what the final product is.
For illustration, the painting itself is the final product. When an artist creates a beautiful illustration, all the value is in the painting. The artist's mood, lighting, skill control, etc. are closely connected with the work. Therefore, if the painting is unfortunately destroyed by fire, then all the value will be in the painting. The value disappears and its magic dissipates.
But for conceptual design, the final product is not the painting, but the final product. Take the popular iPod as an example. A concept designer from Apple got this exquisite design after trying many design drafts. At this time, a sudden fire destroyed all the drawings, but the final product There is no impact at all, and iPod sales in stores will continue. It can be seen that the iPod is the final product, not its conceptual design. Lost design drafts can be easily copied back, which is completely different from original works of art.
Before we go any further, keep this example in mind because understanding the final product is critical. As a concept designer, your job is to create a product, not a work of art, so design comes first, followed by art.
Skills, creativity and speed
There are countless skills in drawing illustrations, because illustrations are to express the artist's ideas, it can be a perfect sunset, or it can be a child's smile, In short, the painter can choose the medium, technique and style at will. Even a black spot on a white canvas is an expression of an idea, because any content and form can be called "art".
But in conceptual design, the key is to "communicate" rather than "express" ideas. At first glance, you may think there is no difference, but in fact it is very different, because the designer's job is to invent new products, and their works must convey their ideas well.
