Weather in Songpan Grassland

Since the altitude of Songpan Prairie is about 4,000 meters, and it has already entered autumn, comrades from Songpan County told us that the temperature there is relatively cold, so we must wear sweaters to avoid catching cold. The grassland is more than 200 kilometers away from Songpan County. We set off at 7:30 in the morning. The weather was not very kind. It started to rain lightly early in the morning, which made people feel a little chilly. I followed the advice of my comrades in the county and put my sweater in my bag for later use. The car took a full three and a half hours to reach the grassland. The place where we got off the bus was the grassland where the Red Army walked during the Long March. There is a Long March monument here for passers-by to take photos. When I got out of the car, a chill hit my face and I had goosebumps all over my body. It was raining lightly, and the whistling north wind blew straight into your neck, making you shiver. I quickly returned to the car and put on my sweater, feeling warm. Much more. Some of my colleagues didn’t add any clothes and stayed in their cars, afraid to come out again.

Songpan Grassland is the base for the development of animal husbandry in Songpan. Since the altitude here is nearly 1,000 meters higher than the county seat, the temperature is also lower than the county seat. Although there is no summer in Songpan, the autumn in the grassland will be very short. It is still early autumn, and the climate here is already late autumn. According to locals, the temperature in the morning and evening is very low, only two or three degrees. By mid-October, winter has entered, and the temperature is below zero.

In winter, the temperature here is even lower, around minus 15 degrees. The mountains are often blocked by heavy snow, and the roads are icy, making it inconvenient for people to enter and exit. The herdsmen grazing will move from their tents to centralized herdsmen’s residential areas built by the government, where they can stay warm during the winter. The winter here is very cold. Unlike the heating in the north, ordinary herders can only stay at home and use stoves to heat themselves.
