Historical evolution of Macao Geophysical and Meteorological Bureau

Until the 1980s, this small meteorological bureau seldom participated in international affairs. 1987, at the joint invitation of Guangdong Meteorological Bureau and Hong Kong Observatory, participated in the seminar on important weather in the Pearl River Delta for the first time. Since then, it has been hosted by the three places in turn every year. The purpose of the seminar is to exchange experience in early warning of severe weather and promote technical discussion and research on rainstorm, tropical cyclone or cold wave.

1992, the Meteorological Bureau was accepted as a member of the Typhoon Committee supported by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (﹝ESCAP﹞) and the World Meteorological Organization (﹝WMO﹞), and hosted the 27th Typhoon Conference in Australia two years later. 1996, the Meteorological Bureau officially became a regional member of the World Meteorological Organization. In addition to fulfilling its obligations, the Macao Geophysical and Meteorological Bureau actively participates in various activities of the World Meteorological Organization and hosts meetings sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization.

1996, Macao Geophysical and Meteorological Bureau cooperated with meteorological departments and institutions of Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries (﹝PALOP﹞) to establish Climate and Environmental Change Bureau (﹝cria﹞)；; In order to gather the strength of the public to study the chain effect of climate on the atmospheric environment.

From 19991February 20th, Macao became the People's Republic of China (PRC) Special Administrative Region. Therefore, the Geophysical Meteorological Observatory was also changed to the Geophysical Meteorological Bureau. The World Meteorological Organization's 13 General Assembly passed the decision to retain Macao's membership and change it to Macau, China. Similarly, at the 32nd Typhoon Committee meeting, Macao was approved to retain its membership and changed to China and Macao.
